Using Your Localhost

Congrats are in order if you've installed your localhost server on Linux.

Getting Access

Your forms and scripts will be stored in the var/www/html folder.

To find it Open the File Manager

You can activate the File Manager by going to Accessories in the left hand sidebar or by clicking on one of the tan colored folders on the bottom panel or in the left hand side bar.

Once opened look for File System in the left column. Open it.

Navigate to the bottom of the folder to var and click on it to open. Then open www and then html.

Right now if to try to drag your forms and scripts into the html folder, you'll be denied access. You need to elevate the permissions for that folder.

To do that right click inside the folder and click Open as Root.

The folder will open again with a red bar across the top that says Elevated Privileges.

Now you can use the trailing folder to navigate to the folder where your forms and scripts are stored.

You can copy and paste or drag them into the var/www/html folder.

Editing the Forms and Scripts

While you have elevated privileges, right click on the html document or the script you want to make changes to.

Use Open with to locate the editor you want to use.

I use both Bluefish and Geany for working on documents, but I much prefer Geany for use with the Localhost.

Set Geany up so that it reopens forms and scripts that you accessed in your previous session.

Just use the editor as you would normally.

Viewing Changes in a Browser

You won't be able to use the Preview function in the editor.(Haven't figured that one out yet)

Just open your favorite browser and type localhost in the address bar and hit enter.

Right now you'll see the Welcome Page.

I recommend removing the existing index.html page and replacing it with a simple menu page named index.html that gives access to all the forms you'll be working on.

Right now when localhost opens you access the forms by adding a forward slash and the name of the form you want to view.

Examples: localhost/text-form.html (Chromium) or http://locahost/text-form.html(Firefox)
