How to Make Money with a Website

You've seen the ads on TV. A whole bunch of actors and beautiful models sitting in their BMW or sitting by their pool in back of their mansion and saying I made $9000 in a month or some ridiculous figure. They finish the ad with a picture of some CDs that you can buy for about $40 that will tell you how to get 100 free websites that will make you an instant millionaire.

Every time I see one of these ads I simply utter the old proverbial, "You %^&*/ Liars!!".

It is Possible

Now, it is possible to make money with a website. You may never become a millionaire doing it, but you could make enough to support your family or supplement an existing income.

I've done it for eleven years. I have had years where I made 6 figures, but for the most part I bounce around in the 5 figure range, making more in good years and less in the bad ones.

The Key to Success

Notice I didn't say the secret to success. There are no secrets. All the information is out there floating around for free. The key to success is traffic. If you don't get visitors to your website, you can't be successful.

My best years of 6 figure incomes happened when I was #1 on Google for the search term create a website. I was pulling about 10,000 visitors a day and selling Yahoo web hosting accounts out the yazoo.

Then Google changed their algorithm, my website started to drop in the rankings, I made some changes to the website and it eventually dropped out of site on Google. Gone was my traffic. Gone was my 6 figure income.

What saved me was that when my site died on Google it went to the top of the rankings on Yahoo. I ended it up with about half the traffic and about half of my previous income.

I've told you all that to get the point across, that the key to making an income on the internet with a website is the amount of traffic that you get to your website.

What Kind of Website?

Unless you have some kind of revolutionary invention, the cure for cancer, the fountain of youth - in essence something that everybody wants and nobody else is selling - the best kind of site for the average person is an information website.

You know something about a topic that other people are interested in. Here are some examples:

1...You've worked in a small auto parts factory and you know how to rebuild alternators or starters. You build a website that shows step by step, how to rebuild the car part and then sell parts or products related to the subject.

2...You have a rare skin disease and found a treatment that very few people know about. Build a website that gives information about the disease. Sell the treatment and other skin care products.

3...You are good at a specific craft. Build a website and add video tutorials that show how to create the craft project. Sell the materials needed for the craft.

4...You have a pet - cat, dog, bird, lizard, snake, ferret,etc - and you know a lot about the particular breed. Build an information site about the pet and sell pet products.

You see where I'm going with this. Everyone knows something about a subject that other people are interested in.

What About the Products?

Many people stop here because they don't think they have any products to sell.

The person building the pet website says, "I don't have any pet products to sell."

To them I say go to petco.com. Go to the bottom of the web page and look for the link that says Affiliate Program. Join their affiliate program and collect commissions for every pet product you sell for them.

There are millions of companies out there with affiliate programs that will pay you to sell their products or services. You can sell anything from nuts and bolts to designer furniture. You don't need any inventory. All you need is traffic to your website.

Building Traffic

The key to building traffic to your website is Understanding Keywords. Make this your focus as you build the pages of your website.

When your website is finished and Published on the net, start trading links with other websites like your own. Place a small ad in the classifieds section of your local newspaper. Add the url of your website to the signature of your email correspondence. Study Affiliate Marketing.

Avoid Get Rich Quick Schemes

Avoid the ads that promise you big bucks if you buy their information or product. The only people getting rich off of these schemes are the people selling the information.

Making money with a website is work. It's just like any other business. You get out what you put in. You may never become a millionaire, but you can create an income!!
