Is Joomla really FREE?
Yes Joomla is really free. Joomla is Opensource software and carries the GNU/GPL license.
How can it be any good if it's free?
Joomla isn't just as good as any commercial website builder out there, I believe it's 10 times better. There is no other product on the market like it.

How's the documentation and support?
Unlike most Opensource that is poorly documented there is a wealth of helpful information and manuals out there that make Joomla easy to learn. There are 2 manuals at the main Joomla site(www.joomla.org) and there also visual tutorials available. They also have a forum that you can join and talk to other people as you develop your website.
If you have to get it through a web host then it's not really free?
You don't have to get it through a web host. You can download it and install it on free web space that you've picked up somewhere. I only recommend that course of action for junk sites though. If you are serious about doing anything on the internet you'll never get there with free web hosting.
Do I need to have any coding experience to use it?
The Joomla system includes a simple WYSIWYG editor. The only coding you will need to do is for adding a logo.
If you choose a template that does not use a logo, then you won't need any coding knowledge of any kind.
Just be sure that when you install Joomla, you place the text that you want in your page heading in the sitename box.
I recommend this method if this is your first site. After you become familiar with Joomla, can can always go back and change the template. That takes about 10 seconds. See Screenshot
